Microsoft rolled out multi-line calling to Teams Phone on iOS and Android in July 2026. If your team is upgrading, here's why business text messaging needs to be part of the plan.
Microsoft began rolling out multi-line calling to Teams Phone on iOS and Android this month, letting mobile workers manage multiple assigned business numbers from a single device. For companies that rely on Teams as their phone system, this is a meaningful upgrade, employees no longer need a second device or a workaround to separate personal and business calls.
But calling is only half of what a business phone number needs to do in 2026. If your team is upgrading to Teams Phone on mobile, now is the right time to ask whether your business text messaging is set up correctly too.
Roadmap item 565131 entered rollout in late July 2026, with general availability expected by mid-August. The feature gives Teams Phone users:
This matters most for businesses where employees handle calls across departments, locations, or roles, think a property manager covering multiple buildings, a healthcare office with a main line and an after-hours line, or a sales rep with a direct number and a shared team line.
Microsoft Teams Phone handles calls well. What it doesn't handle natively is business text messaging on those same numbers.
Customers text business phone numbers. They ask questions, request appointments, confirm orders, and respond to follow-ups by SMS. If your Teams Phone number isn't set up to send and receive texts, those messages either go nowhere or land on an employee's personal phone.
That creates real problems:
The right setup pairs Microsoft Teams calling with business text messaging through the same number. Employees make and receive calls in Teams. They also send and receive texts from a business identity, with a full message log that's owned by the company, not the person.
With Mobex text messaging, businesses can add SMS capability to their Teams phone numbers through Microsoft Operator Connect or Direct Routing. Calls flow through Teams. Texts are managed through Mobex, tied to the same number, with full history and team access. When someone leaves, the number and its entire conversation history stays with the business.
This setup is particularly valuable for:
If you're deploying or expanding Teams Phone in the next few months, run through these questions:
Getting answers to these now, before the Teams Phone mobile rollout completes, is far easier than fixing a fragmented texting situation later.
Can Microsoft Teams Phone send and receive text messages natively?
Microsoft Teams Phone can send and receive text messages natively, but only in limited situations. Native SMS is available for eligible Microsoft Calling Plan numbers in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
For Direct Routing, Operator Connect, or businesses that need features such as shared inboxes, group texting, templates, scheduled messages, or broadcast messaging, Mobex Text Messaging is the recommended solution.
What is the difference between Mobex SMS and Mobex text messaging?
Mobex SMS refers specifically to the Mobex SMS application. Mobex text messaging is the broader service. The capability to send and receive business texts through your Mobex-managed phone numbers, whether that's through the app, through Teams integration, or through a shared inbox.
Is business text messaging a compliance requirement?
In certain industries, yes. Healthcare providers must meet HIPAA communication standards. Financial and legal firms face regulatory recordkeeping requirements. In all cases, using personal phones for customer text messages makes compliance harder, or impossible. Business text messaging through a managed platform gives you the audit trail and control you need.
Microsoft Teams Phone is adding calling capability to mobile. That's a step in the right direction. But a business phone number that can only call and can't text is only doing part of the job.
If your team is upgrading Teams Phone this summer, talk to Mobex about adding business text messaging to those same numbers. We'll show you how Direct Routing or Operator Connect works, what a full message log looks like, and how to get employees off personal phones for good.
